CGPA 4.0 and Co-curricular Activity Marks
Co-curricular activities are important not only for you to keep fit, to provide a platform for you to improve your leadership qualities (i.e. to organize and run activities), it is very important for you to get the course of your 1st choice when you apply for university courses.
The issue of many top performing STPM students who obtain a CGPA of 4.0 and yet not offered the courses of their choice be it the 1st, 2nd or even 3rd choice cannot be viewed lightly by aspiring students.
The current admission system is 90 percent weightage on academic performance and 10 percent on co-curricular achievements. If a STPM student scores 4A, that will mean that he/she already has 90 marks. (Do not be over happy that you get 4As and thus CGPA 4.0, while there are few hundreds of STPM students who score 4.0 each year, there are few thousands who score 4.0 also from other institutions, for example, Kolej Matrikulasi). The next 10 marks will come from co-curricular activities.
If a student applies for prestigious courses like medicine, dentistry, pharmacy or law, the total marks for admission to IPTA needs to be 99 or 100! Anything less than that, he/she will hardly get a chance.*
STPM students normally get 5 or 6 marks for their co-curricular activities. This is probably due to the fact that STPM students do not seriously involve themselves actively in co-curricular activities. Some say that the Form 6 students are loaded with work and they just don’t have the time for co-curricular activities.
The workload of students following the matriculation programme is generally lighter than that of Form Six students. This is an undeniable fact. As such they will have more time for involvement in co-curricular activities and hence score higher marks.
If you know where you stand, you can prepare early. Remember, no matter what the circumstances or constraints, you should be proactive and always be responsible for your own self. Nothing and nobody else is to be blamed. You decide and mould your own future.
* 2012 facts about CGPA 4.0 from the press : While there are about 300 STPM students score 4.0, there are few thousands who score the same 4.0 from Kolej Matrikulasi. (refer to the 2011 results)
