AGEING

As adults approach the 'elderly' age bracket, they will inevitably experience a number of physiological changes. Lifestyle changes follow. While this is a significant transition, it does not have to be a painful one. How well one ages is dependent on how well one monitors and adapts to these changes;

In Malaysia, the 'elderly' officially defined as those above the age of 60 (The World Health Organisation cut-off point is 65.) Our population is ageing fast, with approximately 1.5 million Malaysians over 65 (as at 1 Jan 2015), and another three to four million currently between fifty and sixty.

Past the age of 60, our metabolic rates slow down and many of our organs will operate at half their peak capacity. Our kidneys and liver become less efficient in removing wastes and toxins. Our stomach are less effective in digesting foods

Fluid secretion from saliva to tears will drop as will sensory perceptions - eyesight, hearing, smell and taste. Nutrient absorption will be less efficient and appetites is low, resulting in malnutrition.

Loss of muscle tone will affect the heart's blood pumping capacity, the ability of our gut muscles to move food through the digestive tract and bladder control.

Thus, as soon as one approaching 60, do not trade your health for money any more, let go of your attachment to the beautiful bank notes, you can't bring it along together with you. Time to completely relax and enjoy your life!

Also, a complete health assessment is recommended and followed by annual assessment. A comprehensive assessment would include a risk profile, a blood profile, a physical assessment and nutritional assessment.
