Outlook for the Malaysian Economy in 2016
Although Malaysia’s economy would appear to be one of the least impacted by the UK’s exit from EU, its high trade exposure to Europe and status as a financial hub make it more susceptible to this exit headwinds than some other ASEAN countries. Concerns in this regard have been echoed by the Malaysia Central Bank, which cited the need to shield the country from external risks as motivation behind its July rate cut of 0.25%. The external challenges will not help Malaysia’s deteriorating export sector, which recorded its 19th consecutive contraction in May. In spite of external turmoil, Malaysia is enjoying domestic stability and growth thanks to its solid consumer demand. Industrial production growth has been unrealistically low, yet steady around the 3.0% mark so far this year. Although allegations of graft are still unanswered, Prime Minister Najib Razak’s leadership tenure looks solid, this means that the government can continue to work towards its deficit reduction targets without political distractions.
Consumer prices in Malaysia rose 1.6 percent year-on-year in June of 2016, compared to a 2.0 percent gain in May and below market estimates of a 1.8 percent increase. It was the lowest inflation figure since March 2015 as prices of food went up slightly while cost of transport fell further and cost of housing and utilities were steady. Core consumer prices rose by 2.1 percent year-on-year in June, the same pace as in May.
