CHENG BENG It was the month of April of a year again, where Chinese will pay respect to their ancestors during a particular period, known as Cheng Beng. The whole idea of going to the cemetery to pay our respects to the dead may have a ghastly effect on some. Although I do all the rituals that are required of me, there are times when deep down I wonder if this festival is misunderstood. My family performed Cheng Beng approximately two weeks before the actual date, hoping to beat the crowds to the cemetery. Preparations for that occasion started a week earlier with my mum scrambling about getting all the stuff together, from packets of joss sticks to essentials made out of paper, you name it, she had it. That was where my sister and I came in! We started folding gold, silver and bronze bars out of paper specifically for that purpose. There is always a challenge as to who can fill up the most bags and as always, I end up winning. So, on that morning, everyone surprisingly managed to wake up early and on time. We had one more stop to make, to pick up the food. After that, we started our journey to the cemetery with my dad behind the wheel. The journey was very scenic with the sun rising and the lush green hills by the highway. We met up with the other distance family members at the site. Before we perform the ritual offerings, we did a quick gotong-royong, cleaning up the grave site after finally finding my greatgrandparent's grave among the other hundreds. Cleaning up the grave was more like vigorous exercise than anything else but we work on it happily. Later, an array of scrumptious food was laid out. The best part was after all the rituals were over - we get to dig-in. After eating all those delicious rice dumplings (chang), cake, chicken and many delicacies, washed down with a thirst quenching drink, I didn't think I needed lunch any more. Well, after packing up and when the adults had finished catching up with one another, we decided it was just about time to head home. The funny thing is. ... after all that, I would find myself extra cheerful and a tingling feeling that I've done a good deed. That's the thing I especially like about Cheng Beng - the effect is far from 'ghastly'. In fact, to me, it often turns out to be a social gathering of relatives. Adapted from EFoMS SAL Module
