What's In A Name?

My late mother said that since when I am a baby, I was ill so often with a never ending list of health problems that I was nicknamed Ahmad Sihat by the old folks. They believed a child would be ill often if his given name was unsuitable. From that moment, I was a healthy, naughty and an energetic chap.

In my teens and later when I started working, I seldom fall sick. I was proud of my record during my first 20 years in Shell Malaysia when my total number of sick leave was less than 20 days. During those days, I donated blood quite often. I started donating blood in 1969 and by 1994, I had donated more than 50 times. All through the years, I had donated without thinking of what's in it for me.

Little did I realise that it would pay off later. Well, two years after my retirement, I was in quite a financial problem due to bad business deals. I also had not fully recovered from my asthma and hypertension. So, it was not surprising when one day, I found myself warded at Hospital Tengku Laila in Kuala Kubu for mild asthma followed by acute hypertension.

After a week, I was discharged. I was quite worried about how I would pay for the hospital bills. It turned out that I had mentioned to a nurse that I had donated blood more than 50 times. She said in that case, I would not have to pay a single cent. In fact, I was entitled to a first class ward. All that was required was for me to get a white card - a card given by the local blood bank certifying that I had indeed made such donations.

I was given "VIP" treatment by the staff later because of some simple things I did when I was healthy. I am being cared for and I need not worry should I fall sick. It does pay to give!
