Research shows that professional motivation, morale and job satisfaction are not dependent upon pay. Differences in salary were not related to differences in career satisfaction. Individuals who persist in teaching understand and recognize that financial rewards are limited. We seem to be overly concerned with providing adequate salaries, benefits, facilities, and other 'pleasantries'. Yet these factors apparently have little potential to provide for adequate job satisfaction, for higher level need and fulfilment.

At best, these efforts protect teachers from dissatisfaction in work and ensure that teachers will continue to participate as 'good' organizational members. The really potent factors, the factors with motivational potential, the real determiners of job satisfaction, are harder to come by.
Research revealed that conditions of service, have only limited influence on teachers' attitudes to their work.
One teacher even wrote in her comment : I haven't looked at my pay slip for the last 12 months and I don't know why, it's not a driving force any more. At one stage I used to long for pay day and look carefully at how much I'd got but it doesn't bother me any more.
